Matthew's thoughts: 给我一个吻 (Give Me A Kiss)

It was my first time playing at Novotel’s ballroom, and I was thoroughly impressed. I dare say the guests enjoyed our performance too! Even though it was just Serene and me, we still managed to get through the night with a setlist straight from the 80’s (all alien songs to me.)

You can tell it’s a very cool couple when they jumped at our suggestion to change the 2nd march-in song to 给我一个吻 (Give Me A Kiss) 4 mins before they marched in! Well it’s only because we saw Grace in this stunning pink cheong-sam-ish gown complete with pink feather fan! Of course we had to do something shanghai-ish and she was very sporting.

So we called a friend, got him to google the lyrics and read it out over the phone (like Chinese oral exam) while we wrote it down on our side (like Chinese dictation exam) and somehow we pulled it off just fine...phew. Tze Ching’s also not someone to mess with, after ‘agreeing’ to a horrifying list of things, which includes “buying a branded bag a year for Grace, of which the brand will be determined by Grace”, he signed on the dotted line with a very very finely printed “...terms and conditions apply...” haha.

Poor dude had to let his wife begin the speech first (“From today onwards I promise to always let my wife speak first.” - nervous applause.), and then when it was his turn he opened his speech with, “Ha. I let her speak first so that I will always have the last word.”

They’re just such a cool and sweet couple and it seems they liked our performance too! Made a few friends from within the guests too who came up to encourage us with their kind words – cool couple invites cool guests, ah...

We will definitely share this good experience with other soon to be wed couples. Keep doing what you are doing, you guys rock :)

Hsin Yeow's thoughts: We Could Be In Love

Imelda, Adeline and I had a fantastic time at Azhar and Sri's wedding!

The evening got off to a great start when we met Azhar's friend, Yasser, who made sure our every need was taken care of. He even took some food from the buffet line and asked us to help ourselves during our break!

I was glad to finally meet Azhar, as we had communicated over numerous e-mails to determine which march-in song was most suitable for his sword-bearers. I was honoured that he trusted my recommendation so much, as he chose the one I picked. Here it is:

Imelda and I also enjoyed singing "We Could Be In Love" and the Spanish version of "Lucky". It felt good to challenge ourselves with new songs every now and then. The applause from the audience as we delivered these songs was reward enough.

We also knew that many members of the audience could sing, so we invited two guys (one of whome was Yasser) onstage to perform. In fact, Yasser ended the night's performance with a rousing, full-throated version of the Sinatra classic "My Way". He brought the house down!

Congratulations Azhar and Sri! Thank you once again for engaging us.

Melissa's thoughts: Grow Old With You

The highlight of Vincent and Cheryl's wedding was most definitely Vincent's courageous performance of the popular wedding song, "Grow Old With You".

The butterflies in my stomach have long since disappeared due to my years of performing, but I could still remember how daunting it was to perform in front of a live audience. It wasn't easy for Vincent, since he had to sing and play the guitar at the same time. At the end of the song, he even whipped out a rose secretly taped behind his guitar and offered it to the blushing Cheryl. What a romantic guy!

Kudos to Vincent, and congratulations to the lovely couple!

Thank you for engaging us, and making us feel absolutely at ease. We had a fabulous time!

P.S. Take a look at Vincent's special version of "Grow Old With You"!

I wanna make you smile
Whenever you're sad, pacify you
When you’re feeling so stressed
All I wanna do is
Grow old with you.

I’ll go shopping with you
Pay for all the bills
Carry your bags
When your hands are all full
All I wanna do is
Grow old with you.

Hi Hsin Yeow,

We would like to say a big thank you to you guys.

Melissa sang beautifully and serenade the entire ballroom with her powerful vocals. The band was fantastic as well.

Both songs for the first and second march in were timely and awesome.

Even when the 2nd march in song was decided only on the evening itself, A Little Dream still managed to pull off the performance without a single glitch.

My guests were singing the praises of A Little Dream after the wedding, and a few have asked me for your contacts.

A friend even commented Melissa's voice was so perfect that it sounded like its playing straight from the CD!

Hsin Yeow, thanks very much for coordinating such wonderful entertainment for our great day.

Thanks very much once again.

Best,

Hsin Yeow's thoughts: Step by Step

There's a song by Whitney Houston called "Step by Step", and the lyrics go like this:

And there's a road I have to follow, a place I have to go
Well no-one told me just how to get there
But when I get there I'll know
Cuz I'm taking it

Step by step, bit by bit,
Stone by stone (Yeah), brick by brick
Step by step, day by day, mile by mile

I was thinking about this song when I read what Sihui wrote to me:

"Hugo and I met each other in University. He only took took notice of me in our second year. But he only plucked up the courage to ask me out on our third year final semester."

Oh, but Hugo has a sure-win dating method:

"During our dates, he would have this makansutra guide in his car and he would bring me to different places with good food. You can see he loves good food. =)"

Apart from loving good food, Sihui and Hugo also share a strong connection:

"As for what I love about him, it's got to be the way he can make me laugh till my mouth goes numb, and the strong telepathy between us where many times, we say the same things at the same instant. There are also times where we hum the same songs in our mind subconsciously and one party may just sing it out and surprise both of us."

Eleanor, Nelson and Matthew had a blast performing at Sihui and Nelson's wedding! Eleanor charmed the crowd with her assured hosting, while Nelson crooned his way into the hearts of the guests. Matthew provided solid accompaniment and even harmonised for some of the songs.

Congratulations Sihui and Hugo! Thank you so much for engaging us!

Hsin Yeow's thoughts: Can't Take My Eyes Off You

All grooms should take lessons from Hung Choong when it comes to making tear-inducing speeches. This guy is a natural. He was so successful Valerie's tear ducts didn't stand a chance.

His strategy is to lower Valerie's defences by smacking his lips loudly --- muack! --- to demonstrate how he felt when he first laid eyes on her. That got everyone laughing. They laughed even harder when he simulated his heart thumping (pom-pom-pom) when he wanted to speak with Valerie. From his animated gestures, it seemed as if his heart was flying out of his body.

Then he started telling Valerie how she was the angel in his life, how he would always love her, and take care of her and her family. He spoke sincerely and clearly, his eyes never leaving his beautiful bride. Valerie's friend, Grace, quickly passed her some tissue paper to stem the flow of tears. It was a moving scene.

Bevlyn, Matthew, Raziz and I had a great time performing at the wedding. After the guests were sufficiently "warmed up", we got applause after almost every song. Valerie's mom was also singing along with us, and she told me later that she didn't want us to stop!

Another sign that our performance was well-received were the numerous dedications and song requests that came our way. We did as many as we could, and read out the guests' heartwarming messages that accompanied each dedication.

Congratulations, Valerie and Hung Choong! May you both enjoy a lifetime of joy and happiness!

Jo's thoughts: 甜蜜蜜 (Honey Sweet)

Chun Wing and Leya's wedding was a massive ball for everyone concerned- and by massive we mean MASSIVE, and by ball, we do mean it was just like a royal ball.

It was a huge do in the sprawling spaces of the Swissotel Canning Ballroom, adorned with flowers and, of course, gorgeous guests. It was expertly emceed by a DJ from 933 fm, and us the band were given a special dedicated stage to do our thing.

And of course, the stars of the night themselves, Wing Chun and Leya...they were preceded by a happy entourage of at least ten bridesmaids and best men, all stunning in designer dresses and suits, and the couple themselves, He looking slick and savvy in his three piece and She, svelte and stellar in a pearlescent gown with a creamy royal train, looked like they stepped out of a top end Bridal Magazine. With cameras focused on the glowing pair and the emcee commenting that she felt she was at the union of Chris and Fann, it's not stretching it to say that these guys are one of those unbelievably beautiful Singapore couples.

And obviously they are as loved as they are lovely..their friends were vociferous in their cheering and shouting, especially at silly videos of Leya doing the para para, and Chun Wing leading a mafia crew of suave best men to pick up his bride in the morning, complete with a metal suitcase printed with banknotes to hold the angpow that would be given to the bridesmaids.

Here it is worth noting that the bridesmaids demanded much more than angpow from the groom's crew - the guys had to use their combined leg hair and UHU glue to create a modern art heart shaped pattern before Wing could claim his bride.

Including Leya's colleagues coming up to sing an original love song to wish the couple well, the wedding was full of sweet, sunny, funny moments, and we were hnoured to be part of this huge do

Hsin Yeow's thoughts: Because You Loved Me

One of the more popular wedding songs is "Because You Loved Me". Penned by master songwriter Dianne Warren, the lyrics speak powerfully of being thankful for all the great things love can do.

It's ideal for a march-in, and I was happy to sing it for Ivy and Gerald as they walked into the gorgeous ballroom of Hotel InterContinental. The emcee even sang along with me!

"For all those times you stood by me
For all the truth that you made me see
For all the joy you brought to my life
For all the wrong that you made right
For every dream you made come true
For all the love I found in you
I'll be forever thankful baby"

Melvin, our bassist that evening, asked, "Isn't this song usually sung by female artistes?" That's true, but I found a beautiful cover version by Clay Aiken. Take a listen!

Ivy and Gerald's wedding was memorable for me because of the enthusiastic bridesmaids, who went onstage one by one to wish Ivy and Gerald a lifetime of happiness. They were united in their praise for Gerald, but reminded him that it was his fortune to be with Ivy. I'm sure he felt that way too.

Gerald even planned a surprise for Ivy. He sang the classic 月亮代表我的心 (The Moon Represents My Heart), and what made it even mroe special was that he pulled his dad onstage as well! So the two men ended up singing it as a duet! It was a refreshing sight indeed, and everyone applauded them for the valiant effort!

Congratulations Gerald and Ivy! Thank you for engaging us, and we hope to see you again very soon!

P.S. Ivy heard me perform at Ebelle and Jimmy's wedding, so I got to meet both of them again. As guests, they got to listen to the band's performance in its entirety. Glad you enjoyed it, Ebelle and Jimmy!

Hui Bing's Thoughts: Tonight I Celebrate My Love

From Rebecca and Brian's story, it shows that love really conquers all, even a 7 year age gap :)

"We have a age gap of 7 years, at first I was afraid that we couldn't get along well with the rather big age gap. I was still a student then while he was already a working adult. But after dating for a few months, I found that we had no problems communicating or having different kind of thoughts. And so this relationship goes on for about 5 years till he proposed to me with a bouquet of roses and a very cute car plate stating "MR and MRS LIM". He proposed to me at a place which I don't think most people does which was in one of the open space carpark. haha! Although it was not a very ideal place for this kind of things, but I felt rather touching as I could feel his sincerity."

I really dig Brian's idea of proposing to Rebecca using a 'Mr and Mrs' car plate. Of course, this car plate was featured prominently in their wedding shoot. Our warmest wishes to Rebecca and Brian!

Shawn's thoughts: Two Words

Everything about chijimes was just so right for Wenyao and Fong Yee, from the venue to the decor...they even handpicked the band members! The couple displayed great elegance very subtly, and the band was deeply attracted to further pleasure the guests; to complete the tasteful evening the couple had prepared for them.

It was a delicate evening of swing, and we swung like never before.

A little girl of 6 dedicated a piano piece to the couple and guests, and Ian (our pianist) was watching intently, waiting to help her turn the page but just as the music arrived at the end of the last bar on the page she simply reached out, flipped it and returned to the keys right on the next beat, as if she had rehearsed it many times before!

Wenyao led Fong Yee in a slow dance (come fly with me) immediately after their 2nd march-in. It's such a blessing to be able to play a lovers' tune to lovers, and watch them move and turn in affection for each other.

A lady came up to us before we left and asked for our namecard. she commented 'this is how a band should be! sound good, look good...all black hair and not some gold some orange...' HA!

After watching how Wenyao and Fongyee danced, I remembered my own, two years ago, and went home, held my Mrs for a while, before falling alseep.

Wenyao and Fong Yee, may the Lord bless you abundantly in your lives and marriage!

Jo's thoughts: 我只在乎你 (I Only Care For You)

To people in the wedding music business, it's not unheard of for the most beautiful ceremonies to devolve into just another day at the office (albeit a very grand and beautiful office full of happy people).

So At A Little Dream, it's always important, and lovely to hear the personal stories of the new couple. And there are few better sweet, personal stories to keep bands from potential apathy than 'the groom fell in love with the bride at a singing competition.'

Talk about pressure!

Jean is the songstress in question- Kevin, who said quite firmly that he can't sing, first met her at a contest and professed to being captivated by her sweet voice--- a voice which was generously shared with the entire banquet hall of M Hotel when the couple sang their own 2nd March-in song: Teresa Teng's 我只在乎你 (I Only Care For You) to thunderous applause.

It was apparent why Kevin fell for her voice when the sweet notes rang out. But Kevin's bravery in performing before a lifetime's worth of friends and family when he was very sure he couldn't sing would have contributed to at least half the applause. On our part, we thought the duo sounded lovely and would make for a very harmonious pair indeed!

It was really a very sweet wedding with a stunning couple who were exceedingly friendly and sat down to talk with us as we ate our burger dinners. You could really tell how much the guests loved the comfortable, happy couple by the cheers and hoots at every item on the program...even with guests cheering for us as we ended our final song. Roving photographers captured instant shots for the guests to take home and everybody wanted theirs, of what might be one of the sweetest warmest weddings we've ever had the pleasure to play at.

Hsin Yeow's thoughts: Angels Brought Me Here

I felt privileged to be at Chris and Peggy's wedding celebration, not just because the couple trusted us implicitly to provide a night of rousing music, but also because I was privy to information perhaps not many others knew about.

Chris shared with me a particularly heart-wrenching period of their relationship. This was about three years ago, shortly after Peggy left for studies in Australia.

It was a trying time when they had many disagreements. The number of phone calls slowed down to an agonising trickle, until it stopped completely. Chris was devastated, and he did what he felt was the only thing he could: picked himself up and bought an air ticket to Perth.

Carrying his passport and wallet as his only possessions, he flew over and had a heart-to-heart talk with Peggy. Fortunately, they managed to resolve their misunderstandings, and Chris flew back to Singapore the next day!

Knowing their love story also helped me understand why Chris chose Angels Brought Me Here for their first march-in:

It's been a long and winding journey
But I'm finally here tonight
Picking up the pieces
Walking back into the light
To the sunset of your glory
Where my heart and future lies
There's nothing like that feeling
When I look into your eyes

My dreams came true
When I found you
I found you
My miracle

The band and I had a fantastic time at the wedding! I was blessed with a strong team of musicians with me, and Ariel was a joy to perform with. The Suntec City staff were also quite amazing. They provided a little lamp for Qiuyun so that she could look at her scores clearly, and even pulled up a low table to place our glasses of water.

Congratulations again, Chris and Peggy. Thank you for engaging us, and may you both enjoy many sweet and happy days ahead!

Hsin Yeow's thoughts: Embraceable You

After many days of torrential rains and once-in-50-years floods, Peak Yuen and Jonathan woke up to sunny skies on the day of their wedding. They must have prayed quite hard, because the weather held up wonderfully, throughout the solemnisation ceremony held just outside the East India Room.

After the ceremony, guests adjorned to the East India Room, and began their lunch buffet. Together with Justin and Boon Chye, I started first with a set of jazz standards. There were nods of appreciation, but I wanted to engage the audience a bit more.

During our break, I quickly announced that the second march-in was 甜蜜蜜 (Honey Sweet), and invited the guests to sing along with me. They readily obliged, so Peak Yuen and Jonathan were treated to a rousing welcome as they walked into the ballroom.

Feeling cheeky, I invited Jonathan to serenade Peak Yuen with 月亮代表我的心 (The Moon Represents My Heart). I was second-time lucky when Jonathan agreed without a moment's hesitation. The crowd responded with loud and appreciative applause.

Thank you, Peak Yuen and Jonathan, for being so sporting. Congratulations again on getting married, and may you both enjoy a blissful marriage.

I Know - a beautiful instrumental piece, perfect for a short walk-in.

Embraceable You - Love this romantic tune. The song fits Peak Yuen and Jonathan to a T, judging by how their arms were always intertwined.

Sofyan’s thoughts: Thank You For Loving Me

Throughout the evening, Azuan was always referred to as the Giant with a Gentle Heart by his friends. Well, he surely is a giant, since I have to literally look up to him just to have a little chat with him (or is it the-short-and-tiny me?). Nevertheless, I also testify that he’s a man with a gentle heart – and a creative mind too.

Instead of the slow-motion grand 1st march-in, Azuan and Erfanah decided to dance their way in to “I Got A Feeling” by Black Eyed Peas. They also sang “Lucky” by Jason Mraz / Colbie Caillat as they walked in for the 2nd march-in. And they sang very well – not surprising since Azuan is the lead singer of his own band.

Congratulations to the Beauty and the Giant, and as all Disney cartoons go, may you both live happily ever after!

Hui Bing's Thoughts: Forever Love

It takes great guts for someone to sing a song in front of a ballroom full of guests if he/she has not done it before. More so to perform on their wedding day since usually there are many things going on that day, from the traditional ceremony, photo taking, wedding dinner and so on.

And so, when we found that Keith is going to sing a special song for Esther, Ivan, Ian and I were determined to make that moment really magical. During the short rehearsal, we decided to lower the key of the song slightly to suit Keith's voice. Off went Ian, scribbling the revised chords for the song. We also tried out a few methods of entering the last chorus of the song after the bridge. And we felt that going with Ivan's saxophone lead-in, followed by Keith singing the first line 'Forever Love..' will be the best way. And so we were off!

And I must say at that moment, all of us felt the love in the air as Esther, who was splendid in her victorian-inspired gown, looked at Keith blissfully while he belted out the song.

Dear Keith and Esther, thanks so much for having us at your wedding! We really enjoyed performing the songs for you and your guests. Our warmest wishes to you as you embarked on the next chapter of your life. Congratulations!

Hi Hsin Yeow,

Esther and I would like to say a big big thank you to Huibing, Ivan and Ian for giving us such beautiful memories on our wedding night.

To be frank, I was very nervous and worried before the rehearsal as I had not met up with the band before. All that went away when I saw Huibing's bright smile, the professionalism of Ian and the romantic saxophone masterclass by Ivan. I'm truly honoured and proud to be able to perform together with the band. Thank you for fulfilling my own little dream of singing a love song to Esther.

We reserved our special praise for Huibing. Her voice is so mesmerizing! Her rendition of "Sometimes When We Touch" really touched our heart and my eyes were filled with tears of happiness when she sang the song. Her version of 世界唯一的你 was so captivating that we stopped half way through the photo-taking session just to enjoy her wonderful performance. I really wish we had more time sitting down and enjoy the whole performance.

Please let us know if there's any public performance by the band. We would like to enjoy your music and relive the wonderful night :)

So many guests came up to us to compliment the band and ask who you guys were. It just show how amazing the band is!

"A Little Dream seeks to move, inspire and engage our wedding couples and guests with the magic of live music"

You guys did more than that ....You have reunited all of us and make such a difference to the night!

Thank you A Little Dream!

Sincerely,
Keith & Esther

Hsin Yeow's thoughts: Accidentally In Love

My job is to document the memorable highlights of each wedding, but I drew a blank when I started to write about Marvin and Yihong's wedding.

Not that there weren't anything to write. On the contrary, where do I begin?

Even before the guests entered the ballroom, they could tell it was not going to be a conventional celebration. The bridesmaids and groomsmen were unbelievably united and colour-coordinated. The ladies wore well-cut dresses in the same shade as Tiffany boxes (the colour that sets many female hearts a-flutter), while the guys wore matching ties of a slightly darker shade. The bridesmaids were tending to a candy corner, which drew the kids and even some adults. Rows of cupcakes were placed enticingly round a little tower, and there were candies and cookies galore!

Once the wedding celebrations started, the guests were treated to a stunning slideshow of photos by One Eye Click. Through a series of photographs, the couple re-enacted how they first met each other (apparently under less than favourable circumstances), how they fell in love, and even Marvin's reaction when Yihong accepted his proposal (the shot was of Marvin 3 feet in the air, with a look of utter jubilation on his face)

Click here to see what I mean.

The band also assisted to create some memorable moments. The second march-in was a rousing number, "Accidentally In Love", and the couple rode into the cavernous ballroom in a Vespa. Yihong even ditched the traditional cocktail number and wore white pants instead. The place where the Vespa was parked also became a favourite spot for photo-taking later in the afternoon.

Another touching moment was the couple's first dance, which was to the band's rendition of "So Close". It felt as if the scene from the movie "Enchanted" was re-played, only there was no witch to spoil the proceedings. As the song progressed, several more couples joined in.

Finally, this blog entry would not be complete without mentioning Marvin's surprise performance of L-O-V-E. This man was so sure and confident of himself, he didn't even practice with the band. His band of brothers were his backup singers and dancers, but Marvin didn't need any help at all. When the music started, he merrily danced and sang without missing a beat or note.

Congratulations Marvin and Yihong! It was a pleasure to perform at your wedding. Hope to see you both very soon!

Tanya's thoughts: From This Moment

James and Kelly had a simple but cosy and heart-warming ROM ceremony on a bright and sunny Sunday afternoon, at an outdoor wooden pavillion by the poolside.

Kelly looked stunning and James was suave in an all-white ensemble. The excitement was clearly written all over the faces of the guests as they streamed in before the commencement of the ceremony. The Justice of Peace was not only humourous and dishing out words of wisdom to the newly-weds throughout the proceedings, much to the delight of the audience.

At the end of the ceremony, the newly weds walked down the aisle to rapturous applause and the strains of "From This Moment" performed by us in the background. While it was the end of a gig for us, it signified the beginning of a new chapter in the lives of 2 people.

Heartfelt congratulations to James and Kelly!

Dear A Little Dream,

Heartfelt thanks for providing a fitting atmosphere to our solemnization ceremony. Despite hiccups with timings and sound, Kelly and I were deeply moved by the band's performance, particularly Kelly, who was so emotional during the march-in she couldn't smile. Indeed it has been her little dream come true.

Although we did not have the chance to stay to enjoy the music and get to know the band as much as we really wanted to, please accept our heartfelt thanks for the preparations behind the scenes, and indeed leaving a deep impact on us in a subtle, sweet way.

Kelly and I express regret for not properly introducing ourselves to the band (all a bunch of nerves) and the band to the audience. Regardless, without your help, our little dream wedding would not have come true.

Thank you so much Tanya, Clarence and Selwyn, who made the difference to our special day.

Hsin Yeow's thoughts: I Will Be Here

Edmund and Natalie had a novel idea for a walk-in. They wanted to sing a duet. Not just any duet, mind you, but an original song written for a musical.

The task of playing the tune fell on James' capable shoulders. He arranged for Edmund and Natalie to rehearse with him before the wedding to make sure they knew exactly what to do.

When I heard the couple's assured rendition of the song, I knew why they picked it. The song is simply a true reflection of how they feel for each other. Take a look at the lyrics below.

Edmund:

Is this a dream?
Is this for real?
You are the girl I've been praying for
A vision of beauty
A heart full of grace

Will you give me your hand
I will cherish you till the end

Natalie:

You are the man I have fallen for
One who is loving, gentle and kind
What have I done to deserve this gift?
You are my heart's desire

Together:

This is love, this is grace
You are more than I can imagine or ask for

I was also touched by Edmund's candid speech. He admitted that it was difficult sometimes to express love for their parents. So he asked his parents and in-laws for understanding, and affirmed his and Natalie's love for them. It was a touching moment.

Congratulations Edmund and Natalie! Thank you so much for engaging us!

Junxiong's thoughts: 爱爱 (Love Love)

After 5 full years of courtship, ShunYuan & LiYing finally tied their knot together on this very day! Though this wedding couple is a little shy and reserved, they could never hide their happiness from their beaming smiles throughout the night.

The songs chosen by the couple were also very applauded and well-received by the guests. One Chinese love song 爱爱 is especially popular among the guests which easily caught their attention with the up-tempo rhythm and catchy tune. I guess it also subtly describes their feelings for each other:

"让我做你Baby吧愿不愿意, 让我做你老公吧可不可以, 用这首歌当成媒人, 把我和你绑在一起.."

There is another memorable scene during the traditional "yum-seng" session: the sisters were trying real hard to outshine the brother's yum-seng cheerings! That really brought some laughters to all and adds on fun to the entire toasting session.

Apart from this, we also had a little pleasant encounter with the wedding guests: a 9-yr old boy who is still learning pinao was strongly mesmerized by Adeline's (our pianist) keyboard skills, frequently popping by throughout our performance (perhaps it's time to setup a fan-club, Adeline?).

Hi ShunYuan and LiYing,

Our heartiest and most sincere congratulations to the both of you! Thank you for having us to be a part of your happy and joyous memories on this very important occasion. We wish you two an everlasting and blissful marriage with lots and lots of unforgettable moments as you embark on your new life journey! ^_^
