Hui Ming's thoughts: 你是我心内的一首歌 (You're A Song In My Heart)

Joel

Esther and Teck Kiang looking radiantly in love!
Thanks to Live Studios for taking the photos you see in this blog entry!

This is what the wedding meant to Teck Kiang, the romantic groom:

The most meaningful thing is to allow me a chance to announce to the world that I have married a wonderful, caring, loving and gracious wife, Esther, and express my heartiest affection and gratitude towards her….. I promise to love her and take good care of her till the very last day of my life…..

Certainly, Teck Kiang is not the kind of man to be reserved about his feelings. In fact, he remembers significant dates and highlights of the courtship, and describes them as "fabulous" and "fairy-tale like". From elaborate surprises such as dining in a cable car to visiting the Chinese Garden during the Lantern festival, those were the "happiest moments of my life!"

Performing at Esther and Teck Kiang's wedding celebration was a real joy for me. The guests were very appreciative of our music and clapped enthusiastically at many points of the evening. Esther and Teck Kiang were also keen to create their own special moments through live music, notably, singing their way into the ballroom for their second march-in. They chose a Mandarin pop duet called 出嫁 (Getting Married), and their performance drew loud cheers from the audience!

Another highlight of the evening was Teck Kiang's performance of 小薇 (Xiao Wei). He changed the title to Esther's Chinese name, and sang the song with panache. Naturally, he was asked to do an encore, and he graciously obliged, with an impromptu rendition of Fly Me To The Moon. Esther was simply blushing with happiness at her husband's spontaneous display of affection.

Congratulations Esther and Teck Kiang!

P.S. It was great seeing Ashley, Dennis and Corrine again!

Compliments from Esther:

Dear Hsin Yeow, Bevlyn, Linus and Sebastian,

You guys really did a wonderful job! *4 thumbs up*

It was a pity though that we did not have the chance to sit down and really enjoy the music like the rest, nor a pic with you guys... =(

However, our guests were extremely impressed with your performance, and that includes our old uncles and aunties! Our 80-year-old grandma even commented, "这首歌我听过。他们唱的很好!”...

You guys made the evening so relax & cozy that many actually sing-along...

Special thanks to Hsian Yeow for the excellent coordination and all the good effort and hard work. You are really the only team that we do not have to worry, to ensure that everything is well-prepared before the event. Also Linus for taking time off his busy schedule for doing the rehearsal.

Once again, thanks for making our wedding celebration a memorable and successful one. You guys are really a brilliant team...! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK...!

Best regards

Jo's thoughts: Let There Be Love

On 6th September 2008, Xavier and Kelly were wed, and A Little Dream was fortunate enough to be part of the Franco-Singaporean festivities.

That's right, Xavier the dapper Frenchman swept Kelly the Singaporean sweetheart off her beautiful feet, and consequently has made a promise to be her support in our sunny island for the rest of their lives.

To witness this promise were a multitude of guests from both continents including one table from France, though from the very vociferous and happy French cheers and singing coming from the tables, even during the very Chinese Yum Seng ceremony, one might be forgiven for thinking it was a largely French crowd.

Kelly & Xavier

Indeed, it was an evening full of cross-cultural celebration, with the multilingual Kelly and Xavier waxing lyrical in French and Mandarin speeches respectively and very respectably, and with Xavier even made to show off his growing prowess in Chinese dialects. But whether English, French, Mandarin or Hokkien, there was a universal language flowing merrily and warmly through the ethereally decorated ballroom -- one of kinship and love.

A video was played showing fond pictures of the beautiful bride and gorgeous groom from their wide eyed youth to their weak-kneed romance, drawing sighs and smiles from the guests, and Kelly and Xavier went onstage to demonstrate an authentic French Kiss by a Frenchman. Kelly's friend since forever came up to bravely play a charming rendition of 'Canon in D' dedicated to the newlyweds, making Kelly effusively grateful.

And that was indeed the other universal language of the day: Music. Songs in several languages were performed by a very moved and delighted ensemble including Linus on the piano, Brad on the saxophone and yours truly on vocals.

It was a warm, wonderful, altogether stunning wedding, showing how love speaks across the continents, and A Little Dream was honoured to be part of it.

Congratulations and very best wishes, Xavier and Kelly!

Zheng Quan's thoughts: 今天你要嫁给我 (You're Marrying Me Today)

I remember arriving at Swissotel to find that there were four wedding celebrations at the hotel. It must be a very auspicious day. Then I thought I’d spend too long finding the venue, but with excellent service from the hotel’s attendant, I was directed to the Canning Ballroom promptly.

Just outside the ballroom entrance, I met Huimin, my singing partner for that night. We were both a little nervous and excited about the evening’s show, as we were going to work together for the very first time. In fact, we’ve only met for the second time, other than the time we met up for rehearsal. We entered the ballroom and headed towards the grand piano by the main stage, where we would be singing at. Not long afterwards, Linus, who was going to play the piano for us arrived. We proceeded with sound check and made sure we had the songs in order. After a while, we were all set and ready, waiting for the guests to enter.

Soon, the guests filled up the spacious ballroom constructed with high ceilings and furnished with beautiful crystal lights. The evening started off with video clips of the newlyweds' love journey. Then it was time for the 1st March-in song From this Moment. The couple had specially requested for Huimin to sing the sacred vows at the beginning of the song, which would usually be ignored at other occasions.

Then it was my turn to entertain the guests with the song Sugar Sugar while being greeted by that night’s first dish. I was pretty nervous, as it was my first time performing that song. The first set of our performance was soon over with just a little sweat on our palms at the beginning of it, but we warmed up rather quickly after getting applause from the guests.

Just before our second set, we received an unexpected song request. It was a birthday song for one of the bride’s best friends. Huimin and I led everyone to sing along. That was my first birthday song performance at a wedding dinner! When the song was over, a lovely young lady stood up from one of the tables to give thanks and a toast to the newlyweds.

There were many of my first experiences that night, including singing duets that covered half of the songlist. My favourite numbers were Two Less Lonely People In The World, Fallen, Way Back Into Love, You Light Up My Life, The Way You Look Tonight, and also 朋友 (Friends), for which we received most applause. ;P. Everyone seemed to adore and enjoy singing that song! We ended the evening’s performance with a popular Chinese duet called 今天你要嫁给我 (You're Marrying Me Today).

Working with Huimin for the first time was not difficult at all. She has a sweet personality, and with soft angelic vocals, she will sooth and comfort any soul. I have been working with Linus for a few times now and he is one of my favourite working partners. I am still amazed by how swift and skillful his fingers are (Wish I could play like him.. he plays in any key and no transposition buttons required!!)

Band: Hui Ming, Zheng Quan, Linus

Repertoire:

From This Moment (1st March in), Sugar Sugar (1st Dish), Quando Quando Quando, Kiss Me, Two Less Lonely People In The World, 你最珍贵 (You're The Most Precious One), I Only Want To Be With You, Because I Love You, 制造浪漫 (Creating Romance), Can't Take My Eyes Off You, When You Say Nothing At All

I Finally Found Someone, (2nd March in), Tonight I Celebrate My Love, She, You Light Up My Life, 恋爱频率 (Love Frequency), Fallen, The Way You Look Tonight, 爱和承诺 (Love & Promises), Way Back Into Love, 朋友 (Friends), 今天你要嫁给我 (You're Marrying Me Today)

Compliments from Jingwen and Youyi:

Hi Hui Ming, Zheng Quan and Linus,

Many thanks for performing at our dinner - without which, it will just be another ordinary dinner.

Apologies for not being able to say "hello" or even to take a photograph with you all as we were so busy with the photo taking session. Nonetheless, the performance was great especially the first march in with the vows at the beginning.

Our guests were very impressed with your singing and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves that night. In fact, for many of them, it was their first time to attend a dinner with a live band.

Definitely look forward to many of your performances in the future. Once again, thanks for making our wedding dinner a special one.

With Warm Regards,

Juliet's thoughts: My Valentine

We assured Pauline, the couple's appointed wedding coordinator, that the march-ins will be as romantic as they wanted, and we hope they were. The response from the crowd for both the march-ins was warm and encouraging.

She had painstakingly pre-selected several possible choices, but couldn't decide on the final two. We rehearsed them for her, and she finally decided on My Valentine (instrumental) for 1st March-in and 今天你要嫁给我 (You're Gonna Marry Me Today) for the 2nd March-in. Joel kept to a sweet, mid-tempo version for the 2nd March-in, as the couple strolled into the elaborate 'labryinth' of tables and confetti.

Well-done folks, you made it! :) Their friends and families sure seemed to have a lot of fun. We started off the 1st set with 恋之憩 (Love Dock) with a slow bossa nova flavour, then dived into familiar favourites such as Close To You and Fly Me To The Moon, as well as Mandarin popular love songs such as, 爱是你眼里的一首情歌 (Love Is A Song In Your Eyes) and a more upbeat 一对一 (One To One).

With the couple receiving a BMW for a wedding gift, the crowd's spirits were definitely lifted, and ready for our rather eclectic and varied 2nd set. :) Swingy 我要你的爱 (I Want Your Love), 纸飞机 (Paper Aeroplane),Dream A Little Dream and Unforgettable sure got Joel (on Piano) and Stephen (on Sax) goin'!

It's a pleasure working with such a positive, fun and spirited team, that we still hitting it towards the end of the set! The night ended with nostalgic love numbers such as 追 (Chase),甜蜜蜜 (Honey Sweet),月亮代表我的心 (The Moon Represents My Heart) and 爱是永恒 (Love Is Eternal). We enjoyed playing for the blissful couple and hope they had fun too.

Hsin Yeow's thoughts: (I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons

Bevlyn and I were supposed to sing for Rachel and Stephen on 24 Feb, but as fate would have it, the latter couple brought forward their wedding celebrations, so we got to sing for Joshua and Jorgina after all.

I could help laughing when I read about how Jorgina's first impression of Joshua. She wrote, "I haven't told anyone about this, but my first impression of Joshua was not so good... haha... coz he missed classes, didn't contribute to our first project assignment, was late for the first project meetings and sent out weird text messages late at nights!"

What she wrote next about Joshua's sanitary habits had me rolling on the floor...

"We didn't really click until this one day that he told me, I always tell my mum that bedsheets need not be folded, since I'm going to sleep in the bed when I return! You see, I have a liking for dirty and disorganised guys.. That was when I started to notice him more.."

To "dirty and disorganised guys" out there, if you're single and despair of finding a partner, have hope! Look harder and perhaps you'll find someone like Jorgina!

Joshua, on the other hand, touched me when he wrote, "I like Jorgina for being understanding, intelligent and caring. She has a childlike innocence that's endearing. She's also someone who shares my dreams. In fact, I love almost everything about her (think that’s what love is about!)"

The highlight of the wedding was when Joshua decided to propose to Jorgina once more, on bended knee. Jorgina had "complained" that he didn't go down on one knee when he first proposed, so Joshua wanted to do it right this time, in front of all their guests. Needless to say, Joshua's surprise gesture brought tears to Jorgina's eyes.

Congratulations, Joshua and Jorgina!

P.S. I asked Jonathan to play the most romantic song he could think of during Joshua's proposal, and he chose (I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons. It was the perfect song.

Compliments from Joshua and Jorgina: A great perfomance indeed =)

Hi, this is Joshua & Jorgina...

We must really say that Hsin Yeow, Bevlyn & Johnathan make such a perfect team and have staged an exceptionally great performance on our wedding day! Our parents, relatives, friends & collegues were so well-entertained and amazed by their perfomance.

So much so that many have asked us for their contacts so that they could have they performed at their wedding & company functions! There were some who even approached the band themselves to ask for a namecard. That's how good they really are!

We are really grateful for their fantastic performance and for those of you out there surveying the site and considering whether to engage them as the band for your big day, think NO MORE! They are the one! Who can light up the atmosphere for the dinner widely perceived as "boring & draggy".

At least we would say they make ours such an enjoyable one that up to today people thank us for the wonderful & eventful night and still continue to sing praises about them. I guess no word can express our gratitude to the team...all that we can say is we will strongly recommend A Little Dream to all our friends and relatives!

Thanks a million,
Joshua & Jorgina

Bevlyn's thoughts: Better Together

Cheryl and Clement are 2 friends whom I got to know through my NUS days, when we were in the 歌谣组 (singing group) of the Chinese Society. And since music had played such an important role to put them together, I wasn't too surprised when they decided to engage our band for their wedding celebration. In fact, it seemed essential!

One highlight of the evening was to have Linqi (good friend of Cheryl) and Edmund (good friend of Clement) to each give a speech before the couple's speech as it definitely gave the guests more insight into the couple's love story. Edmund assumed he was given the task to give a speech because he was the chairman in the singing group, and it was him who 'assigned' Clement to Cheryl's group. In a nutshell, things might not have been so smooth without him. He also revealed how Clement had changed after knowing Cheryl, because he now takes hours instead of 20 minutes to finish a buffet meal. Ah. We can all see what love can do.

Given how the couple met each other, it seemed a natural thing for Clement to serenade his bride on their wedding day. With practically no rehearsal with the band, Clement sang the classic 爱很简单(Love Is Simple) for Cheryl. Even though he was a tad nervous at the beginning, the voice was unwavering, and eyes on Cheryl all the time. Way to go!

Cheryl had repeatedly asked me not to 'sabo' her to sing, and she had requested me to sing Love You I Do. Her sweet dedication went like this:

I’ll like to dedicate the song 'Love you I do' to Clement to thank him for his undying support and encouragement whenever I need him. I’m truly blessed to have found a man like him who's willing to stand by me no matter what happens.

Photobucket

Thanks to Cheryl, I had a blast singing that song. We also enjoyed performing songs like 少年游 (Youth Ride) because we grew up listening to these songs. In fact, if marriage signifies the beginning of another stage in life, wouldn't it be nice to have songs you grew up listening to to celebrate the transit? Imagine if you hear these songs at other people's weddings:
蝴蝶飞呀 (Butterfly), 红蜻蜓 (Red Dragonfly) and (Love) by the '90s boy band 小虎队 (The Little Tigers).

Bevlyn's thoughts: Dedication All Night Long

Little did I expect our performance to be that significant at Nicholas and Serene's wedding celebration.

Before the big day, Nicholas had already informed me to pick 2 songs from the repertoire to dedicate to their parents. I promptly picked La Vie En Rose and My Girl as I felt that these 2 songs (in comparison to the rest) were probably closest to the elders' hearts. However, those were not the first songs to be dedicated for that evening.

A table of friends first marched up to us and requested that I say, "We wish Nicholas and Serene will stay in love forever and ever..". That simple line of dedication was the ignition to a whole string of dedications and song requests that rolled in. Among others, a bewildering one read "Congratulations, Bill Gates!". To that, Nicholas promptly turned to the table of culprits and gave them a flying kiss.

A high point for me was when I heard, during the photo montage, the theme song from a very old drama serial 青春123. It is so heartwarming to know there still are people who remember and enjoy songs like this one. Now I can't get it out of my head!
