We were pleased as punch to be invited to perform at Doris' birthday party (let's keep her age a secret, shall we?), held at Seascape Gallery at Sentosa Cove.
For one, it was an opportunity to shake the dust off the lyric sheets of our Mandarin and Hokkien classics because the guests simply loved them. They were rather vociferous in their support, and even came up to the microphone more than once to sing along with us! We were glad for the spontaneous performances, since it made the atmosphere all the more jovial!

One of the memorable highlights of the evening was when Doris' children came up and delivered a 15-min speech about their mother. Filled with amusing anecdotes (e.g. My mother is a perfectionist, because she once woke me up at 7am and asked for my car keys as she wanted to straighten my car!), the speech tickled the audience no end.

It seems like yesterday when we welcomed Jonathan's first-born, Ms Natalie Lin.
Happy birthday, Natalie! You're growing up to be a beauty!
It's hard to top a birthday celebration like the one for Sylvia. It had all these great elements: presence of family and close friends, heartfelt speeches, presents (there were lots of them!), surprises and --- ahem --- a live band playing all your favourite songs!
It was clear that Terry, Sylvia's husband, loves her to bits. Not only did he organise the party, with the help of Ivy (restaurant owner of Smoochies) and Gladys of Storm, he willingly hid himself in a big box and leapt out of it to surprise Sylvia just as everyone was shouting, "Happy birthday!" Kudos to Terry!
We had a fantastic time performing at the celebration! Stephen, Niq and Ji Xiang proved a formidable combination, probably because they enjoyed great chemistry together. Not only did we perform many of Sylvia's favourite Cantonese numbers, we also took on several song requests, including '80s pop hits like 潇洒走一回 (Walking In Style), 你是我的唯一 (You're My Only One) and 朋友 (Friends). I sang most of these requests from memory, which just goes to show how much those songs were a part of my life.

I am a big fan of surprises, since it takes lots of heart and effort to plan one. Rachel was painstaking in her preparations for her husband Vincent's surprise birthday party --- she sent out invites to thirty or so of their closest friends, engaged us to provide live music, asked a connoisseur to pick special wines, and made sure that Vincent had no clue as to what was going behind the scenes. All he knew was that he was checking into the gorgeous Scarlet Hotel for a romantic weekend.
Needless to say, when Vincent finally realised what Rachel had planned for the evening, he beamed from ear to ear. Before the dinner commenced, he took the microphone and thanked his wife for organising such a grand surprise for him. Then, he sprung another surprise of his own: he invited everyone present to attend a BBQ to celebrate Rachel's birthday!

Feri, Mario and I started the night's performance by dedicating 月亮代表我的心 (The Moon Represents My Heart) to Vincent and strolled to the various tables, singing classic love songs and jazz standards. Everyone was appreciative of the live music, and gave us copious applause when we ended our performance.

The best way to celebrate a birthday is to do it in style.
On her birthday, all Linda had to do was stick a pin on her blouse, one which proclaims, "It's my birthday today!", and show up at the Singapore Island Country Club. Thereafter, she was ushered into a room (The Brassie & Spoon) decorated with red, black and gold balloons by her beautiful daughter Hazel, and filled with her family members, relatives and closest friends.
While Linda was enjoying her sumptuous dinner, Feri and I strolled in, brought out the microphones and started performing her favourite songs! Before I started singing, she probably thought that we'd entered the wrong room, but I explained that her husband had engaged the band as a surprise for her.
Feri and I had a wonderful time! I found a great partner in Feri, who provided solid accompaniment, and could handle different tempos and keys with consummate ease. He even helped me sing backup for Under The Boardwalk!
The party was a great success, filled with sounds of roaring laughter, spots of spontaneous dancing and scores of rambunctious kids attempting to dance the ballet and karate-kick each other at the same time. After three hours, it drew to a fitting close when everyone sang the Happy Birthday song to Linda, who was beaming with joy. I'd say it was a grand way to celebrate a birthday, wouldn't you?
Once again, happy birthday Linda! May all your wishes come true!

A cheerful voice greeted me when I picked up my phone.
"Hi Hsin Yeow! Remember me? I'm Eunice. You sang at my wedding in Oct 05."
(It only took an instant.)
"Oh, of course I remember you! Your wedding was held at Changi right? You wore a blue dress that night!"
(Why did I remember that blue dress? Strange. I also remember the sumptuous meal the hotel prepared for us. How we got the crowd to sing the Birthday Song with us, to celebrate the birthday of the couple's parent.)
Eunice was so satisfied with our services, she called to engage us to perform for her son's first birthday party! Yup, her son, Reagan, was turning 1 in May. This was what she wrote,
Reagan is a very cheerful baby boy. He is healthy and tough. He looks just like Roy but he has my smiles and dimples. He is a Mummy's boy who never fails to give me a smile when I return from work. The long hours (17) of labour pains were all worth it because of his smile. By the way, Reagent will be a big brother in November this year when I give birth to our second child!
(Wow, Eunice and Roy certainly didn't waste any time!)
Our band had a great time performing at the party! Part of our repertoire was taken from the list of songs we sang at Eunice and Roy's wedding back in 2005, and it never occurred to me at the time that I'd be singing at their child's birthday party.
Dear Reagan,
Happy birthday! I hope you enjoyed our performance for you. Even though you probably didn't understand a word we sang, we dedicated a song to your Mom on your behalf, for enduring a 17-hour labour to bring you into this world. It's called 妈妈我爱你 (I Love You, Mom). You can thank us later, after you've grown up.
You're blessed to have such caring and loving parents in Eunice and Roy. Hope to see you again soon, hopefully, at your brother's birthday party next year!

breadcrumbs, so I called Matthew, Bevlyn and Jonathan Lim to have dinner there on Monday.It was ostensibly Matthew's farewell party, but we took the opportunity to celebrate the birthdays of February babies (Jon, Bevlyn and me) as well.
Food was good, but the conversation was better. We also played a game of cards involving the construction of tunnels to find gold. Wanted to play more, but we were too distracted by the yummy peach cheesecake and phototaking.
At the end of the dinner, Matt gave quite an emotional speech, and promised to return in November to perform with us. We'll hold you to that, Matt.

I received a call from Adelene one fine day, saying she would like to engage a jazz band as a 50th birthday gift. I was thrilled because it would be in a private residence, with up to 150 invited guests.
It wasn't until I reached the location then I realise who the birthday boy was. Mr Sandy Oh greeted me with a warm smile and shook my hand, making me feel very comfortable in his humongous and Bali-styled villa in an instant. Even though his attention was on the many guests coming from all directions that evening, he never failed to give appreciative applauses and eye contact to the band whenever he was nearby.
During the speech, Mr Oh mentioned he only celebrated his birthday twice in his life - once when he was 21, and that day when he turned 50. He would like to spend more time with his family and take things slow. One interesting segment which I guess a lot of people did not anticipate was the announcement that all cash gifts for his birthday would proceed to Pathlight School, a school for children with special needs. And to make sure the donors know how their money would be utilised, he introduced Ms Denise Phua Lay Peng, MP of Jalan Besar GRC, who happens to be the acting principle of Pathlight School, to give a 10-min slide/video presentation on the school.

It was definitely one of the best gigs I did - the great chemistry I had with Tze Chin and Boon Chye. But it was Mr Oh's generosity and warmth which lingered with me for some time after the party.
