Serene's thoughts: 月亮代表我的心 (The Moon Represents My Heart)

Departing from the usual splashes of lavish colours such as the likes of red and gold, the colour scheme for the wedding of Henry and Wee Cheng was pastel green and white, which was a breath of fresh air. Sometimes, less is more. Sometimes, small is everything beautiful.

And I find this very true of Henry and Wee Cheng's wedding. Every couple has a definition of their special day and how they want to celebrate the beginning of this new chapter in their lives. For Henry and Wee Cheng, it was a nice, cosy, yet rowdy gathering of relatives and friends. A feeling of purity, bliss, and serenity surrounded the ballroom, a perfect setting for the wedding of Henry and Wee Cheng, who come across as a very sweet and loving, albeit a tad reserved.

ZQ played the role of emcee for the evening and as always, he never fails to entertain the crowd and garner fans from the floor with his friendly and personable banter, as well as his soulful rendition of love songs. The guests at Henry and Wee Cheng's wedding were a very happy bunch. The band was truly appreciative of their warm applause throughout the evening as we delivered songs that the couple had specially chosen. Given that there were three Teresa Teng numbers in the repertoire, we concluded between ourselves that the couple must be huge fans of this legendary songbird.

One thing for sure though, there were many Teresa Cheng fans amongst the guests! The first Teresa Teng number we sang for the evening was <<我只在乎你>> (I Only Care About You). Midway through the song, I spotted some in the audience singing along with me, which was really heart warming to witness from the stage. We had a couple more Teresa Teng favourites (<<甜蜜蜜>> (Honey Sweet), <<月亮代表我的心>> (The Moon Represents My Heart)) lined up for the evening and as we progressed, the applause from the floor came as soon as we announced that we were going to perform a Teresa Teng number, (even before we started singing), to the extent ZQ and myself joked to the guests that they were making us really nervous, as knowing they were such fans, we had high expectations to meet!

Of course all spotlight of the evening was on the lovely couple. And did their friends had a good time teasing them! We spotted a table happily carrying out a series of games for the couple to which they politely obliged.

I remember at one point, seeing Wee Cheng standing on a chair and everyone enthusiastically shouting all kinds of game instructions at the couple, which was all great fun to watch. There was also a guest who requested for the band to sing a slow mandarin number so that they could get the couple to do a slow dance.

We happily obliged with a slow duet version of <<月亮代表我的心>>. However, the couple was reluctant to dance and once again the floor was abuzz, with some guests nominating names for the one dance of the night! Well! No one danced eventually to which the band and all the guests enjoyed a good laugh over. Needless to say however, everyone had a good time and there was a little sing-along session going on around the room!

I remember, shortly after the 2nd march-in, ZQ shared with the guests on how Henry and Wee Cheng met..and then sang the song Can't Take My Eyes Off You.

Love knocks when you are not looking, and at times in the most interesting of places.

Many a times, we are swept off our feet watching two leads fall in love on film...two complete strangers who cross paths, perhaps on a train, or on the street..Cupid strikes and a love story unfolds. Henry and Wee Cheng are two lucky people to experience such magic as I understand this was how they met: travelling home in the same direction every day. A journey that must be so saccharine sweet, only they will know, …and that which led to them wanting to spend the rest of their lives together.

Thank you Henry and Wee Cheng, for having A Little Dream at your wedding. We were deeply touched by your appreciation of our presence, and our heartiest congratulations and warmest wishes to the both of you.

Compliments from Wee Cheng:

Hi Serene, Zheng Quan & Joel,

You guys rock!!! Many of the guests complimented that the band performance was really great and they indeed enjoyed themselves that night.

At one moment, I wish I could stay at the table a little longer to listen to your singing before I went for 2nd march-in change.

Engaging "A Little Dream" definitely created a romantic ambience for the dinner. Some of the guests were asking for the band's contact the very next day.

Once again, thanks for the wonderful performance.

Hsin Yeow's thoughts: My Destiny

Roy and Kat's wedding was, in my (biased) opinion, the coolest of the five weddings held at Raffles The Plaza on 17 Nov 07.

The reason: theirs was the only wedding with a live band!

In contrast to couples who engage live bands only when they have some spare funds, it was a high priority item on Roy and Kat's list.

The couple engaged three of my favourite musicians to work with: Jonathan Ang, Jonathan Lim and Feri. Together, the four of us had a great time performing for the couple and their guests.

But things were not so smooth sailing at the beginning. Although Roy and Kat chose a list of beautiful love songs, I could sense that they were unfamiliar to the majority of the guests.

My suspicion was confirmed when a silver-haired uncle in a red polo shouted from his seat, "Sing a Mandarin song!" With the blessing of Roy and Kat, I changed the repertoire completely, and sang Mandarin classics by Teresa Teng. I even threw in a Cantonese number, 追 (Chase), by Leslie Cheung and a pop hit, 嗜好 (Hobby), by Leo Ku for good measure.

The erstwhile quiet crowd rewarded our effort with loud applause. As we left the ballroom after a satisfying performance, the red-shirted uncle thanked me profusely and even apologised for the trouble. No trouble at all, uncle!

My Heart Belongs To You (1st March-in), Love Is A Many Splendored Thing (First Dish), Fly Me To The Moon, Beyond The Sea, My Destiny, Close To You, La Vie En Rose, Just The Way You Are, What A Difference A Day Made, For The First Time, Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You, Unforgettable, When You Say Nothing At All, Grow Old With You

Songs To Recommend:

My Heart Belongs To You - This Jim Brickman number didn't leave a deep impression upon first listen, but grew on me after a while.

My Destiny - Another romantic number, this could be sung as a duet or as a male solo piece.

Hsin Yeow's thoughts: Moondance

Halfway through the wedding, Alison pulled me aside and said in glee, "Everyone's so relaxed! I've been to weddings where everyone is so serious. I wanted my wedding to be different, and I can't believe it's coming true!"

That's the magic of intimate gatherings, I feel. There were less than 20 tables, but Alison and Marc chose their multi-national guests well. One 'crazy' chap even flew for 20 hours from San Francisco just to attend the wedding.

The evening started swimmingly because Alison had shared with me the story of how she met and fell in love with Marc. I was touched by her candour and generosity. Even though she had never met me prior to the wedding, she opened up to me unreservedly, while the hairdresser was teasing her hair into curls in fact.

Marc and Alison

I was moved when Alison complimented Marc, and said that he was the reason why she became the person she was today. It turned out that Marc was instrumental in encouraging her to better herself, and develop skills she never thought she had. In return, she gave up her job in Singapore and moved to Beijing with him.

Armed with the information, I was able to give a short toast to describe the love Alison and Marc shared, as the guests raised their glasses and wished the couple every bit of happiness they deserved.

Some other beautiful moments of the wedding:

- when Alison and Marc's friends surprised them by asking them to cut out a piece of cloth in the shape of a heart together (using very tiny scissors!). Apparently, it was a German tradition.

- when Alison came to me and 'complained' that Bevlyn's touching rendition of Two Words moved her to tears

- when Alison and Marc agreed to dance after I surprised them with my request

- when several other guests joined the dance floor and shimmied to our uptempo numbers

Band: Bevlyn, Hsin Yeow, Ein Ein

Repertoire:

My Best Friend (1st March-In), Everything, Two Words, L-O-V-E, Fly Me To The Moon, I Only Want To Be With You, She, Tell Him, You Belong To Me, Moondance, A Love That Will Last, Quando Quando Quando, Love Will Keep Us Alive

The Way You Look Tonight, The First The Last My Everything, Fallen, Nobody Loves Me Like You Do, Something Stupid, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, You Can't Hurry Love, Sway, La Vie En Rose, Save The Last Dance For Me

Wedding Tips:

- Be open to your emcee so that he can inject a more personal touch
- Incorporate interesting traditions into the programme
- Be spontaneous and relaxed; your guests will take your cue and feel more at ease too!

Compliments from Alison:

Thanks so much for the wonderful performance on our wedding day. The day was simply awesome. Setting the ambience is never easy but you guys managed to do it right.

ALL of my guests raved about how great you guys are and you know what, you managed to win the hearts of so many people.

We have never seen a wedding so relaxed and really, music calms the soul. Every of our guests are simply enjoying every moment. From the 1st march in till the very end, you guys are just amazing!

We regret that we don't really have the chance to sit back and enjoy BUT hopefully we are able to see you AROUND in one of the weddings of our friends =)

Thanks a lot guys for the wonderful memory. Thanks for being part of our important day.

Hsin Yeow's thoughts: Love In Any Language

I met Kamonwan a few minutes before she was due to enter the ballroom, looking gorgeous in her bridal gown. I asked, "How are you feeling? Excited?"

In a moment of candour, she burst out, "Yes, I'm so excited and nervous! I went to the restroom several times already!"

That gave me all sorts of funny images in my head, so I scuttled back into the ballroom.

In spite of Kamonwan's initial nervousness, she showed no signs of it when she had to give a speech with her husband Ian. Speaking in Thai, and then in English, she gave thanks to her parents-in-law for making her feel welcome, and promised "to love Ian forever".

Ian and Kamonwan's wedding was significant in that it gave Bevlyn the opportunity to sing in several languages. She impressed the audience with her versatility, as she sang in English, Mandarin and French. She even made a brave attempt to sing in Thai, (the Mandarin version of the song is here), and was rewarded by appreciative applause from Kamonwan and her family!

Another memorable part of the dinner came in the form of a highly energetic one-year-old, who could not resist clambering up onstage with us. He had the most adorable face, and gazed at us with eyes that were limpid pools of black. He was holding a marker, and he mimicked us by wielding it like a microphone, which amused us no end.

I was trying my best to interact with him, and even sat down with him on the steps to the stage while singing Every Day I Love You. His mom also sang along with me, and echoed the line, "Every day I love you...", as she looked lovingly at her son.

P.S. I was utterly impressed by the service of the staff at Oriental Hall. They were quick and attentive, and courteous to a fault. Plus their nasi goreng was delicious!

I have to thank Wedding Concierge for giving me the opportunity to sing for Joey and Alvin. It is always a joy to sing at Oriental's Atrium Ballroom because the sound team is so pleasant to work with!

Joey and Alvin had requested for us to perform from the 2nd march-in onwards, so when I started singing for their 2nd march-in A Moment Like This, I caught a few heads turning around to find the source. It always amuses me when this happens!

Alvin and Joey were classmates in their secondary school days, but they barely knew of each other's existence! Fate had it that they would get re-acquainted at the school's 40th anniversary dinner, and subsequently knew more about each other through intensive sessions of ICQ chat. For shy guys, you may want to consider this approach of proposal: Alvin took Joey to Equinox for a great dinner but didn't pop the question because Joey smelled something fishy. So he popped the question via SMS at the stroke of midnight when Joey was in her dreamland. Alvin sure knew how to make good use of technology!

Alvin is an extremely shy guy who does not fancy being in the limelight. But I persuaded him to give a speech, which I figured would make the wedding be more personal. In the end, he gave a short but sweet address to the guests. On the other hand, Joey complements Alvin very well because she appeared to be more comfortable being in the limelight - she changed her outfit three times! It was her big day and it was only right that she enjoyed herself to the fullest!

Here are some photographs of the wedding!

Compliments from Alvin and Joey:

Dear Bevlyn and Ein Ein,

Thank you both very much for the fantastic performance put up on our wedding night. Guests complimented Bevlyn's vocal powers and her abilties to host the night bilingually.

Everything went smoothly for the night, which was very important. The second march in music "A Moment Like This" was marvellous. I felt so touched!!!

A really professional pair to engage for any weddings.

Actually, I was a little selfish about introducing your services to those getting married. However, I guess, I must be fair to those who are looking for a memorable wedding as well....

So, I have decided to post your URL on my personal website as well....

Will post up photos and videos of the night after I have received them from my photographer.

Hsin Yeow's thoughts: Crazy Little Thing Called Love

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

When Alan began his thank-you speech, I nearly choked in surprise. He said, "To all my distinguished guests, the freeloaders, and the gatecrashers... thank you for being here."

It was not the typical speech. Alan was a master of deadpan humour, and it showed in the way he delivered punchlines when you least expected it. He also spoke eloquently about his love and gratitude to his mother, and I could see her dabbing away some tears.

Apart from Alan's speech, I will also remember the exuberant reaction of the guests to the dance numbers. When Angie and Alan first told me about the dance segment, I was worried that no one would join the couple on the dance floor. My worries proved to be unfounded. By the time Bevlyn reached the chorus of We've Only Just Begun, the dance floor was packed to the brim!

When I started singing Sway and Crazy Little Things Called Love, the excitement really kicked up a few notches. Guests were singing along with me while cha cha cha-ing, twirling or shaking their booties! It was such a rare and amazing thing to witness at a local wedding, you just had to be there to believe it!

Take a look at the dance floor! )

Bevlyn's thoughts: Out of L-O-V-E

Apart from what Hsin Yeow had highlighted, I think another special 'high' of the night was when Angie surprised Alan with the song L-O-V-E. She had secretly taken 5 minutes (only) to practise the song with us less than two hours to their 1st march-in!

I have to say that most grooms are hesitant about performing publicly, hence I'm sure Angie's gesture of love would have touched Alan and the guests, who clapped along in elation.

Band: Hsin Yeow, Bevlyn and Ein Ein

Repertoire:

La Vie En Rose (1st march-in), She, Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, Love Me, Valentine, Wonderful Tonight, 至少还有你 (At Least There Is You), Amazed, 我愿意 (I'm Willing), Put Your Head On My Shoulder, 但愿人长久 (May All Live Well and Long), Have I Told You Lately?, 月亮代表我的心 (The Moon Represents My Heart)

Here and Now (2nd march-in), We’ve Only Just Begun (1st dance), Sway (Group dance), Crazy Little Thing Called Love (Group dance), C’est Si Bon, Cheek To Cheek, Fly Me To The Moon, When I Fall In Love, The Way You Look Tonight, You Are So Beautiful, Come What May

Songs to Recommend:

Put Your Head On My Shoulder - This song was my introduction to Michael Bublé, and I was immediately hooked on his smooth-as-silk vocals. Bublé's phrasing is distinctive, and his superb cover of this Paul Anka's classic gives it new life.

And yes, I know the song is about a person in love with another who doesn't quite see it yet. But who knows? Perhaps Alan was in that situation before, just that he managed to win Angie's heart in the end.

Wedding Tips:

(1) Inject a little humour in your speech
(2) If your guests are the kind to dance, make sure the band's repertoire includes dance music
(3) Surprise your spouse by singing to him!

Compliments from Alan:

If I recall correctly, it was back in August this year that my wife and I were pondering if we should engage a band to sing at our wedding dinner. My wife did a lot of research on many of the bands available here. Although we eventually narrowed our selection to A Little Dream, we were still a little worried as their performance would be crucial in attaining the desired atmosphere during our dinner. To relieve our concerns, we requested to listen to Bevlyn’s performance and to observe them during one of their rehearsal sessions. Both Hsin Yeow and Bevlyn were extremely accommodating and even sang some of the songs we planned to include in our repertoire.

It turned out that choosing A Little Dream was one of the best decisions we had made. Bevlyn’s heavenly voice was fantastic and Hsin Yeow deep vocals were excellent. My all-time favorites are La Vie En Rose and 但愿人长久 (May All Live Well and Long). Both songs are very meaningful, describing deep & everlasting love between two people. It was a very moving experience for me to listen to A Little Dream perform them. The pairing of Bevlyn and Hsin Yeow was so ideal that it is beyond all doubts they were more than capable of bringing out the best in all the songs we chose. Our guests gave very good feedback on the band’s ability to perform.

A Little Dream was highly professional, creative & accommodating. They were more than just a band playing. Their finesse in setting the right tempo throughout the evening was remarkable. I would definitely highly recommend them to anyone who wishes to engage the best band in town.

Compliments from Angie:

The beginning & change of plan:

Originally I wanted a jazz band, as it added a nice classy touch to a wedding dinner I attended some years back. But after attending a charity ball earlier this year which had a live performance, Alan & I were inspired by the kind of energy and positive response the performers had on the guests. It was then that we decided to have a live band perform at our wedding dinner. We wanted our wedding dinner to be different from the typical wedding dinner with the typical dinner agenda (which usually involves yum seng after yum seng, cheesy games and distasteful humour); we didn’t want to end up with a room full of guests waiting desperately for the dessert dish to come so they could go home after an evening of boredom (I remember being bored out of my brains at most Chinese wedding dinners and vow never to make our guests feel that they would rather be some place else) and we wanted to add magic to an already magical evening.

A radical move:

So after doing quite a fair bit of research online, I got in touch with Hsin Yeow, and the rest is history. Like Alan said, it was one of the best decisions we’ve made for our wedding day. Since there was a band, there had to be dancing and I knew some of my relatives would be sporting enough to get down and boogie on the dance floor. My parents too had dancing at their wedding dinner years back so I guess it’s not that uncommon for us to have had a little dancing during our wedding.

Magic moments:

A Little Dream made our wedding dinner a magical memory, which will remain in our hearts as well as our guests. We marched in to La Vie En Rose serenaded by Bevlyn, whose crystal clear yet husky (don’t ask me how she does it) voice shall ring in my ears for a long time to come. Hsin Yeow’s soulful voice added depth to the songs and when he dedicated me the song She, I stopped breathing for a few moments and just let myself get lost in the song.

Comments to individuals:

To Hsin Yeow: I originally chose Put Your Head on My Shoulder as I liked the melody and the slowness of the song. After reading your comments on this song, I went, "Hey! Oh My Goodness – He’s spot on!" Alan apparently started liking me 3 months before we were formally introduced to one another. Isn’t that right sweetie? Hehee… So, Hsin Yeow, you’ve just added even more meaning to our repertoire.

To Hsin Yeow, Bevlyn and Ein Ein: Thank you so much for being so supportive, professional and accommodating. It's been a real pleasure working with you and I wish you all continue to do what you do best – bringing a smile to people’s face through your music. I'm looking forward to watching the video footage of the wedding dinner as I want to hear you guys sing! Didn’t get a chance to do much of that during the dinner.

To couples who are still scouting around: If you’re truly looking for a live band who will make a world of difference to your wedding dinner, A Little Dream is just a phone call away. All I ask is that you ensure your guests are spontaneous, appreciative of music and willing to show these musicians and vocalists the support and respect they truly deserve. They are a bunch of talented individuals, who literally make music when they come together…

Hsin Yeow's thoughts: Shake Your Bon-Bon!

What a good looking couple!

Singing for Charmaine and Brendan was akin to attending a reunion party.

Brendan was the main coordinator for Jack's wedding, and he and Charmaine engaged us after listening to our performance. Jack flew all the way back from the US to attend Brendan's wedding, so I got to see him again. Another familiar face was Sherwin, who was host for both Jack and Brendan. (Sherwin's a wonderful host, by the way.) As I spoke to both Jack and Sherwin, it was as though we had been friends for a long time. But that's how I treat the couples (oh, I abhor the word "clients") for whom I perform. As friends.

I was also glad that Charmaine did what I suggested for her second march-in. When the doors opened to the tune of 夜来香 (Fragrance In The Night), Brendan strode purposefully to the centre of the ballroom, turned around and waited, looking suave and debonair in a spiffy black suit. As the music swelled, Charmaine danced her way in, wearing a flaming red cheongsam and brandishing a little black fan. She had a fiery glint in her eye, and minced her way down the red carpet with amazing poise. When they finally met, Brendan stretched out his hand, and twirled Charmaine into his arms. Everyone broke into thunderous applause.

The night's performance ended on a perfect note when Sherwin grabbed the hand of a guest and went onstage to dance when I sang Sway. While they were shimmying up a storm onstage, Brendan and Charmaine, in the midst of taking photographs with their guests, were also ordered to dance. They were sporting enough to join in the fun. I later found out that Brendan was captain of his University jazz dance group. Chey! No wonder he looked so comfortable shaking his bon-bon.

Band: Hsin Yeow, Jonathan Ang and Boon Chye

It was my first encounter with Boon Chye, and I must say that the experience was wonderful! Boon Chye's virtuosic skills and Jon's inspired accompaniment was a magical combination. I almost forgot to sing at certain points, so enthralled was I by their playing.

Repertoire:

Fallen (1st march-in), Let There Be Love, It Had To Be You, Fly Me To The Moon, Everlasting Love, For The First Time, Just The Way You Are, Have I Told You Lately?, I Only Want To Be With You, Bewitched Bothered & Bewildered, When I Fall In Love, Wonderful Tonight, So Nice, The Way You Look Tonight

夜来香 (Fragrance In The Night) (2nd march-in), Beyond The Sea, C'est Si Bon, Crazy Little Things Called Love, Come Fly With Me, C’est Magnifique, She, Three Times A Lady, L-O-V-E, Sway

Wedding Tip:

Create a bit of drama for your entrances!

Compliments from Charmaine and Brendan:

Truth to be told, we hadn't in mind a band for our wedding dinner. But while attending Jacky's wedding in early July and appreciating the music from A Little Dream, topped off with Hsin Yeow crooning, we knew that we had to get them on board for our wedding party!

No questions asked and we didnt even bother to ask for other quotations/comparisons.

Good also that we both love Jazz music which the band does very well too. Special requests were also met with no additional costs!

Thanks for adding spice to our wedding night! Thinking back in retrospect, if we didn't have you guys there, it would be like having KFC chicken without the mash potato! Haha, rather lame analogy , but you get the drift..

Xie Xie and see you at Bobby's!!!

Hsin Yeow's thoughts: New York, New York!

Sorry, couldn't get a picture of Jack, who was, erm, occupied.

In case you're wondering, Jack was trying to remove Elynn's garter with his teeth.

An quick Internet search reveals that the tradition of tossing the garter dates back to fourteenth-century France. Medieval French revelers considered pieces of the bride's attire lucky, and guests would literally rip off pieces of her gown. To defend herself, she began to throw them her garter! In modern times, her bashful groom does it for her and tosses it to the bachelors at the wedding. The man who catches it is thought to be the next to marry.

What wedding traditions would you follow? Tossing the bouquet and garter are Western traditions, but more and more couples are incorporating these customs into their wedding celebrations. And why not? These are fun activities that lighten up the mood and add a dash of spontaneity to the proceedings.

I was also rolling in stitches at the Best Man's speech. He claimed he was unprepared for it, and maybe he was, because he started talking about their hijinks (mostly involving drinking copious amounts of alcohol) back when he and Jack were teenagers.

I had a great time performing for Elynn and Jack. The sound system was good, and the two Jonathans provided excellent accompaniment. Best of all, we received positive response from the guests, one of whom booked us immediately for their upcoming wedding!

P.S. As Elynn and Jack were both working in the U.S. before the wedding, they had their wedding photographs taken in New York City. Stunning location + Lovely couple = Beautiful memories to last a lifetime!

Band: Hsin Yeow, Jonathan Ang, Jonathan Lim

Repertoire:

Even if you think Kenny G is over the hill, you must agree that his signature piece, The Moment, brings on the chills. Well, we have our very own Jonathan Lim who can perform that piece for you.

The Wedding Song (Sax), When I Fall In Love, Can You Feel The Love Tonight?, Dream A Little Dream, Have I Told You Lately?, Just The Way You Are, Fallen, La Vie En Rose, Quando Quando Quando, Wonderful Tonight, The Way You Look Tonight, C'est Si Bon, It Had To Be You, L-O-V-E

The Moment (Sax), Crazy Little Things Called Love, Come Fly With Me, Sway, Magic Moments, Amazed, You Are So Beautiful (1st Dance), In This Life, Save the Last Dance For Me

Wedding Tip:

Check out wedding traditions from other cultures. If you find them meaningful, consider including them in your wedding too!

Compliments from Elynn:

(This was first posted in an internet forum)

Hi everyone who is looking for a live band,

I recently engaged A Little Dream for my wedding, and I must really say that they did such a phenomenal job! I love it especially the part where they played our march-in song, I myself just felt so touched coz it was so warm and romantic. I also love it when they played during my solemnization..I feel they know when to create that atmosphere..

As a whole, their presence simply made the whole event so so so romantic! I definitely recommend to everyone who wishes to make their evening a more lively yet romantic one! The money is definitely well spent, as there is no way background music can make the atmosphere so romantic.

In fact, one couple friend who attended my wedding that night engaged A Little Dream immediately for their upcoming wedding after seeing their performance...=)

Keep up the great job, A Little Dream!

(Hsin Yeow: Thank you Elynn, we will!)
