Call me an Idol fan if you will, because I do enjoy watching the programme. Have been following the series since Season 2, although my viewing patterns have shifted noticeably, from watching every episode on TV to scouring for videos online.
Still, the wealth of talent is amazing, and it is a constant source of inspiration for me. Not only did the show introduce me to many beautiful songs, it taught me to constantly think of how to interpret a song creatively.
There are so many songs that I want to recommend to you, so I'll start by focusing only on those sung by each season's winner. Please listen, and enjoy!
Season 1 Winner: Kelly Clarkson
You're All I Need To Get By (lyrics)
Sung during Motown week, Kelly blew away her competition with a blazing rendition of this soulful classic.
I will go where you lead
Always there in time of need
And when I lose my will
You'll be there to push me up the hill
There's no, no looking back for us
We got love sure 'nough, that's enough
You're all, you're all I need to get by.
Season 2 Winner: Ruben Studdard
Music Of My Heart (lyrics)
Claymates cried foul that year, but Ruben's talent was undeniable. He sang this song during Diane Warren week, and he made it entirely his own.
You've opened my eyes
You've opened the door
To something I've never known before
And your love...
Is the music of my heart..
Season 3 Winner: Fantasia
What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life? (lyrics)
Oh, what can I say about Fantasia that hasn't been said? She made Paula cry with her rendition of this song; I, too, was a wreck by the time the song ended.
Through all of my life..
Summer, winter, spring and fall of my life,
All I ever will recall of my life
Is all of my life with you.
Season 4 Winner: Carrie Underwood
Bless The Broken Road (lyrics)
Carrie's one of the most successful recording artistes today, and her performance of Bless The Broken Road proves that she can hold her own against anyone.
Every long lost dream led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart they were like northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you
Season 5 Winner: Taylor Hicks
You Send Me (lyrics)
Simon Cowell sums it up with one succinct word: magic. I remember watching Taylor and thinking, "That guy has mad talent!"
At first I thought it was infatuation
But woo, it's lasted so long
Now I find myself wanting
To marry you and take you home
EDIT: Sang this song at Robin and Steph's wedding!
Season 6 Winner: Jordin Sparks
On A Clear Day (lyrics)
There were nine contestants that night, but Jordin showed star quality from her very first note to her last.
On a clear day
Rise and look around you
And you'll see who you are.
On a clear day
How it will astound you
That the glow of your being outshines ev'ry star.
Season 7 Winner: David Cook
First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (lyrics)
Many predicted that it would be a showdown between the Davids, but it seemed as if David Cook snatched the title from underneath David Archuleta's nose. Still, when I heard David C's breathtaking version of this song, the choice was pretty much set for me.
The first time ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and stars were the gifts you gave
To the dark and the empty skies, my love,
To the dark and the empty skies.
