Bevlyn's thoughts: My Baby Just Cares For Me
It was little bit of a déjà vu when I sang for Mike and Hwee Hoon's wedding, because it didn't seem that long ago when they had come down to the exact ballroom at Four Seasons to preview our band during rehearsal!
Their solemnisation was held right outside the ballroom for the few close friends and family members while the three of us set-up and did some sound check and practice inside the ballroom.
Mike and Hwee Hoon love the song A Girl Like You, and had initially requested for my band to perform the song for their 1st march-in. But we later came to the decision that it would be better to play the CD because the song is written for a male to sing to a female. Lyrics here.
The sound system at Four Seasons was excellent that evening. With Joel on the baby grand piano and Leo on his mellow-sounding saxophone, we played like excited children with our hands on great toys. It was the first time Leo jammed with Joel, but their chemistry was impeccable.
The guests are rather reserved, so when we hear thunderous applause from 1 or 2 tables after great classics like Do That To Me One More Time, When You Tell Me That You Love Me, I Only Want To Be With You and Fly Me to the Moon, we knew that we had sung songs right up their alley of tastes!
Mike and Hwee Hoon's wedding was kept simple without the usual suspects: photo montage, video highlights and speeches. When I asked Mike later why he decided not to have a speech, he explained that most speeches are 'perfunctory'. And he joked that he could not sing a song to Hwee Hoon too, because the rest could not wait for him to finish up his singing during the gatecrash in the morning. At this point, Hwee Hoon jumped in to explain that was why she married him - because he did not try to sing. What a great sense of humour this couple shares!
Thank you Mike and Hwee Hoon for having us perform at your wedding. We wish you many years of marital bliss ahead!
Band: Bevlyn, Joel, Leo
Repertoire:
Come Away With Me, Do That To Me One More Time, Fallen, Happy Together, How Do I Live, I Wanna Make It With You, Stuck On You, When You Tell Me That You Love Me, Your Song, I Only Want To Be With You, It Might Be You, Lovin’ You, Dream a Little Dream
Wishin’ and Hopin', Fly Me to the Moon, For Once In My Life, (I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons, L-O-V-E, My Baby Just Cares For Me, The Way You Look Tonight, When I Fall In Love, C’est Si Bon, La Vie En Rose, And the angels sing
Song To Recommend:
My Baby Just Cares For Me - I love listening to this great jazz classic, but I was a bit worried when I had to sing it because it is deceptively easy. But luckily we nailed the song and so now I'm addicted! Excellent lyrics here.
I was also surprised that there is a clay animation on YouTube for this song. Musicians will go crazy to see the piano hammers, the bass plucking and the drum brushes in action:
